Chapter 9. To England’s Shores We Finally Sail

On both Sundays in which their visitors attended services, everyone was eager to be introduced to the Viscount from England and his valet. It seemed to Elizabeth, as she surveyed the scene of church members congregating at the base of the steps leading to the vestibule, that Jack was all but forgotten in the excitement of having a titled gentleman from across the Atlantic seated in the wooden pews of the growing Methodist flock. Frank Richards seemed to be studying her every move deeply and she noticed she looked at him differently too. She wondered what it would be like to accept his offer but she still felt very uncomfortable with the idea that she’d be related to Jack if she pursued a relationship of marriage with Frank—Jack, who had abandoned her. She felt she would never escape the past or her mistakes if she drifted in Frank’s direction. Another part of her wondered if he might be the only offer of courtship she might have again… and so she could barely nod or say hello to him after the service but did her best to seem polite under the circumstances. She really had to think upon his offer when her mind was clearer and when she was away from Kentucky. It seemed as though words could not escape her throat when he tipped his hat to her as people spilled out of the church, but finally a small “Hello, Frank. Rose Marie’s skilled hands on the piano, accompanied by Abigail’s beautiful singing voice, delivered a beautiful rendition of Hasting’s hymn, “Rock of Ages,” just before the sermon. They were accompanied by the loveliest sounds coming from Noah and his violin, which had been polished for the occasion until the sun’s rays danced and gleamed upon it as he played. The golden haired sisters and brother were met with generous applause that turned Abigail’s cheeks a stinging red as she took her seat on the pew beside Mother. She hadn’t been able to deny Father’s request that she sing one more time for the congregation before her voyage to England, though she felt somewhat humbled and unqualified to minister in any capacity. She felt she had barely grasped that the Lord had forgiven her for compromising His word. Deep down, she knew He had heard her prayers and had indeed forgiven her. When she sang the words to the song, she closed her eyes and sang from the heart like a lark. Out came
